Capstone Project: At Source Waste Transportation & Separation System
This project was completed in collaboration with Sankoya Technologies, creators of a sustainable on-site micro treatment system for human waste. Our capstone team was tasked with developing a solution that can be retrofitted into existing bathrooms to separate and transport waste directly from a toilet to Sankoya's treatment system.
Our solution was a perforated conveyor belt. This would be placed behind/underneath a traditional toilet, allowing solid waste to fall onto it and be carried forward, while liquid waste is separated via drainage.
The conveyor terminates with a custom dry maceration system intended to rip apart toilet paper before it enters Sankoya's treatment system. Liquid is also caught in a tray below and flows towards the end so that it can also be treated.
The conveyor was driven with custom sprockets designed for our chosen chain pitch and roller diameter.
SolidWorks Sheet Metal was used for the conveyor plates to create easily manufacturable parts.
Our team utilized 3D printing for rapid prototyping, as well as a surrogate solid waste recipe for testing. The images below showcase some of our prototypes.
